Happy Heavenly Birthday!

Today is my Mom's 66th birthday which she is celebrating in Heaven (if birthdays are even celebrated there.)

She had 63 "Earthly birthdays," and shortly before her 64th the Lord took her home.

Every year on this day I find myself wondering just what exactly do folks do in Heaven on birthdays. Maybe birthdays are just like any other day there. And maybe, just maybe...days aren't days at all. I have no idea what TIME is even like in Heaven.

Anyhoo...pictured here are where her remains lay. I never thought they'd be here in MY home. I was fine with having them at my Dad's place...but recent circumstances called for the urn to be relocated. So...here it is, and inside...there she is (at least the physical parts.)

Thankfully, I know that the true essence of my Mom can never be contained in a jar. Her soul now dwells in Heaven, full and in tact. Knowing that gives me great joy, and one of these good ol' days...I'll be right there along side of her.

With regard to MY physical remains...I would love to have my corpse placed on a bed of logs to be set afire and pushed out to sea. I find that to be the most beautiful way to lay one to rest. Legally I know it's not possible, but if it were...that's how I'd wanna be "sent off."

Nevertheless...I digress.

I said a little prayer today and asked God to give my Momma an extra special hug on this...her extra special day.

Happy 66th Birthday Mom! I love and miss you!!

Now (deep breath in)...Let the DIALOGUE begin: I know it's morbid to think about, but...how would you like for your body to be disposed of once it's time?

Talk to me!

Til nex time...

Remember to Look on The Back

Here was my Facebook post from this morning:

"Arrived at church this morning and a lovely gift was waiting for me. Hand-decorated by one of my church-family members. She even included my FAVORITE verse of Scripture. It's sooo me...and I love it!!!"

And the stone that you see pictured here went along with the post.

I can not fully express how OVERJOYED I was to receive this stone. I love it for so many reasons.

1. It was THOUGHTFULLY created.
2. It was UNIQUELY designed JUST FOR ME.
3. It symbolizes things that I love...SINGING, and God's Word (my FAVORITE Scripture, Psalm 34:1).

Now I was happy with just those three things.

Then...

My friend "Kay" walked in.

As I was thanking her for the gift she told me that she had gotten the stone from one of my favorite hiking trails...one of my "peaceful places." Those who know me well know that this place MUST be near the ocean...and it is. Wow! As if it weren't already meaningful enough...that just added to it.

But like a Ginsu Knife commercial, I have to say, "Wait...there's MORE!"

As she continued to tell me about the stone, I happened to flip it over and noticed that she had written a special message on the
back (get out your tissue folks!)

I was done!

It read:

"Truly, you are such an amazing person. I am so inspired by you and blessed to say that I know you.
Love you,
"Kay"
7-15-15"

I really don't know what to say to that. All I know is that I try to "let my light shine" and try to treat others the way I want to be treated...with kindness, love, understanding, and every GOOD thing that should be shared.

Of course, I am flawed, and "miss the mark" DAILY...but the goal each day is to be a little bit better than I was the day before.

None of what I do is of my own accord, but it is because of the Holy Spirit who dwells within, who allows me to inspire, encourage, and lift up the spirit of others however and whenever I can.

I am sooo very thankful for the wonderful folks whom God has placed in my life who, "know me" and "get me" and my sister-friend "Kay" does. Many "know me", but very few "get me". As easy-going of a person as I am, that part often baffles me, because I'm really not that difficult "to get".

Anyhoo...I will be taking my stone with me to work tomorrow, and there it shall remain as a daily reminder for me to "Just Keep Singing" and to bless the LORD at ALL times, continually keeping His praises in my mouth.

Let the DIALOGUE begin: What was the most meaningful hand-decorated gift you've ever received?

So today is my birthday...

Well...here we are folks! July 14th. My 47th birthday.

I did good.

Only got teary-eyed once thinking about my Mom and that fact that I simply WILL NOT get the call that I've always received on this day. In case you're wondering what that song was, I'll write the words here. The funny part is, I don't even know if these are the exact words to the actual song, but this is how MY ears have always heard them:

"So today is your birthday
That is what I've been told
What a wonderful birthday
You are one more year old.

On the cake there'll be candles
all covered for you
What a WONDERFUL birthday
Happy Birthday to You."

That's the song I will forever miss.

Not gonna say much more 'cause there's just not a whole lot to say. I love my Mom. I miss my Mom. And I thank her for bringing me into the world on this day 47 years ago. I thank her for keeping me instead of "letting a rich White lady have me". Yes...those were her words and that was almost my fate. She was just a young girl, and I was to be put up for adoption and raised in a "better" family because that is what happened to babies born to very young mothers back in 1968. But God had other plans...and I am so glad that He did.
Let the DIALOGUE begin: What special birthday tradition would YOU miss if you didn't have it anymore?

Goodbye 46! Hello 47!!

Today marks my very last day of being 46. Although...if we wanna get "technical"...I'll be 46 until 2:20pm and 59 seconds TOMORROW. But for the sake of keeping things simple...today is the last day.

I gotta tell ya, 46 kicked my arse!

I was unemployed TWICE, had my car (very expensively) towed for the first (and hopefully LAST) time in my life, and...worst of all, my Mom left her life here on Earth and began her eternal life in Heaven.

So tomorrow will be difficult for me, because it'll be the first one without my Mom. It will be the first birthday WITHOUT the special birthday song that she'd sung to me every year for as long as I can remember.

Of all the "firsts" that I've experienced since November 9, 2014...THIS will be the toughest. I love my Mom. I miss my Mom. And although our relationship was not always the best, she was my mother...the one who cared for me, and loved me in her own unique way. It may not have always looked like love, but she LOVED me...this I know.

I wanted to write her a letter. Maybe I'll do that tomorrow. There are so many things that I wish I had said before she left. And I don't just mean in the days before she left, but in the months, and years.

Sometimes when I pray, I ask God to give her messages from me. Biblically speaking, I don't think that's how things work, because I don't think she has any remembrance of her life on Earth. So if He gave her a message from me, would she even know who I am? I don't know. Maybe I won't know until I get to Heaven myself. And maybe then it won't matter because I won't remember that I ever had this thought here on Earth.

But...what if?

What if God really does relay messages?

So...I probably will write my letter and ask Him to read it to her anyway. What's there to lose, right?

I will say this...46 wasn't ALL that bad. With the bitter, God blessed me sweet.

When I was down (especially financially), friends and family came to my aid. Some folks I am still repaying, but I am thankful that they were there for me when I needed help.

When I was down while my Mom was sick, and after her life here had ended, friends, family, and especially "Joe" were right by my side to lift me up and encouraged.

And although I was out of 2 jobs, I now have one that I really enjoy. They work me HARD, but I'm glad to be working.

Oh...and there's "Joe". After being "friends" for 12 years, we finally became "more than friends" and I am thoroughly enjoying the journey with him.

So there you have it folks! Happy Birthday Eve to Me! 47...I'm ready for ya! By the way...as crazy as this sounds, I really don't know what 47 is gonna feel like because I never felt 46. Those ages SOUND so old, but I don't FEEL them AT ALL. Maybe 47 is the new 27. That's probably how I'll approach it.

Anywhoo...I am blessed, and as the song goes:

"I've had some good days
I've had some hills to climb
I've had some weary days
And some sleepless nights

But when I look around
And I think things over
All of my good days
Outweigh my bad days
I won't complain..."

13 Days Until...

July. Month of my birth.

This year its arrival is bittersweet.

I've always loved the month of July and the many birthday celebrations that take place throughout. Yes...I'm one of "those" people who celebrates their birthday from the FIRST day of the month to the LAST. I simply LOVE celebrating this LIFE that God has given me. Not that everyday isn't cause for celebration, but there's just something special for me about the actual MONTH.

So as much as I am anticipating the arrival of July 14th, I'm not quite sure at this very moment how kind the day will be for me. You see...every birthday, for as long as I can remember, my mother would sing me "The special birthday song". Every year...without fail. No matter how old I got...I could count on hearing that song. I never realized just how special it was until November 9, 2014 when my Mom left her life here on Earth and began her eternal life in Heaven. Hearing her sing the song on July 14th, 2014 was the last time I will ever hear her sing it (at least in THIS life anyway).

So at this very moment in time, I just don't know what to expect. I pray that I'll be ok. Perhaps I'll spend the day reflecting on the life of the woman who brought me into this world. Then again...that might NOT be such a good idea because it'll probably make me cry. And there's no crying on your birthday, right?

We'll see.

Anyhoo...we have 13 more days to go. If you're reading this and you're one of my friends...holla at cha girl on the 14th please. I'm gonna need a WHOLE LOTTA love on that day.

Let the DIALOGUE begin: If your Mom is no longer with us here on Earth, how long has it been? Have you had a birthday without her yet?

Time Flies...

On this day 25 years ago I received a welcomed surprise.

At 5:59 a.m. I got the meet the little baby I'd been calling "Matthew" for the previous 9 months. I had only had ONE ultrasound during the pregnancy and that was VERY early on...so in my mind, we were having a BOY.

"It's a girl!", the nurse announced.

I was like, "Huh???"

So they said it again.

Hmmm...

As I was processing the fact that my "Matthew" was actually a GIRL...the next thing I hear is, "Look at this baby's hair!"

What? What about her hair? What's wrong with her hair? Can I see it???

They actually took her OUT of the delivery room to show her hair to the other nurses.

I'm still laying there waiting for MY TURN to see MY BABY that I had just given birth to.

So...they bring her back in and I see what all the fuss was about. I had a little "readhead." A BEAUTIFULLY UNIQUE little REDHEAD.

That was another thing for me to process.

Where did the RED hair come from? NO ONE in the family had red hair...at least no one living. And there hasn't been anyone since.

I gotta tell ya...that hair has been quite the attention-getter...from day one even until now. EVERYWHERE Lauren goes, that hair turns heads.

I still remember the STUPIDITY of people who would come up to me, holding my brand spanking new baby in my arms, or pushing her in the stroller and they'd ask, "Is that her NATURAL color?"

I would just look at them with a face that said, "Are you SERIOUSLY asking that question? SERIOUSLY?!?"

They'd soon get what I was givin' and would realize the ignorance of their question.

This went on for years! Now she gets women who wanna know "What box number" her hair color is...as in DYE. Folks still don't get it.

Anyhoo...my little redhead is 25 years old today and she has made me EXTREMELY proud over the years.

She's a really sweet young lady, loves the Lord, loves children...especially those with special needs. She's a hard worker and just got accepted to Grad school. Yep...my kid's pretty cool, and it is an absolute BLESSING to be her Momma.

Let the DIALOGUE begin: For those of you who are parents, did you get any "surprises" with any of YOUR children?

Toes Socks and Candles

***Today's post is dedicated to my mother Rebecca. She passed away 33 days ago and never got to see this day...her 64th birthday.***

On November 9th when my Mom's Earthly life ended and her Heavenly life began, it seems that a flood of questions entered my mind that I'd never given any thought to before. I knew that soon after November 9th the holidays would begin to rush in. First up was Thanksgiving, which came and went...without my mother's presence. Soon after Thanksgiving I knew that one of the most difficult "firsts" was right around the corner. December 12th...my mother's birthday...without my mother.

As often as I've wondered what she's doing in Heaven, who she's met, who she's reunited with...did it all happen the day she got there or do the "meet & greets" take place over the span of eternity...I've been so very curious about THIS day...the day of her BIRTH.

I've wondered...are birthdays celebrated in Heaven? Or is the day that you ENTER Heaven (in my Mom's case, that would be November 9th) the day that is celebrated? Or is there NO celebration at all? I just don't know. Sure wish I did though.

Anyway...my mother's birthday has always been an interesting one. Challenging is probably a better adjective.

With some folks, friends and family have a fairly good idea of what to get that individual as a gift. With my mother...not so much. She didn't really have a "favorite" anything.

No favorite color.
No favorite food (or at least I thought, until I read her Auto-obituary).
No favorite musical artist.
No favorite actor.
No favorite author.
No favorite fragrance.
No favorite song.
No favorite TV show.
Nothing.

Yet, even without a "favorite" anything...she always loved whatever I would get her. Perhaps that was just her being my Mom. But anything I got her, she cherished.

Over the past 10 years or so, I came to learn that there were 3 things she particularly liked...one of those three, she LOVED.

She liked scented candles.

She liked toe socks.

And she LOVED chihuahuas...especially her own. Agape, Lazarus and Sarah were her babies. Of the three, Agape was MY favorite. I cried like a baby when he died. He was the sweetest dog I'd ever known.

Sarah died a couple years ago, and she was truly my "Momma's girl". Sarah and my Mom were BFFs. When Sarah died, my Mom was crushed. Even in casual conversation if Sarah was mentioned my Mom's whole demeanor would change and I could actually SEE the sadness come over her. Eventually, I learned not to mention Sarah.

And then there was (and still is) Lazarus. My Mom called him her "Baby dog". Sweet sweet Lazarus. He now waits for my Mom to walk through the door again...not understanding that she never will.

So...as I said, my Mom loved her dogs, scented candles, and toe socks.

Although I couldn't get her a new dog each year for her birthday, I could (and DID) get her toe socks and candles. She never wanted or asked for anything, yet she was always so happy when I'd walk in with my simple little gifts. Yet what she enjoyed MOST OF ALL was the fact that I was THERE. Most days I wasn't able to stop by until after work. When I'd get to the house she was ALWAYS sleeping. My mother slept more than anyone I've ever known. But as soon as I'd get there, within minutes she'd be rounding the corner, find her spot in the living room, and would sit with me & the kids for as long as she could before she'd get tired again. I will always remember the words she would say as we'd get up to leave, "Thank y'all for coming over. I love ya, and I had a wonderful birthday". Even as I write these words I can still see her in the chair she sat in, and I can hear the words as if she's in my ear right now. Right now.

So...I may not have any idea about what her day was like today, when I said my morning prayer I asked God to give my Mom a special hug. I never ask Him to hug her FROM me, because honestly, I don't think she knows or remembers who I am. She won't know or remember me until I get to Heaven. At least that's what I believe. In my mind, knowing and remembering are forms of looking BACK here to Earth, and since Heaven is PURE joy, there's no way that anyone THERE would EVER want to look back HERE at all of the sadness, and evil that goes on in "the world". I don't really care to argue the point or convince me otherwise. In that regard I'm pretty set. And for that reason, I just ask God to give her a special hug. HE knows who it's from and for me, that's all that matters.

So there you have it. My Momma's birthday in a nutshell. Oh, and in case you were wondering...her favorite food was "grits and eggs".

As you can imagine, this has been a difficult day for me, and I sure could've used a hug or two...or three or four...

I miss my mother more than I ever imagined I would. And on THIS day, and EVERYDAY, I just want to see her face, hear her voice, and give her another hug. I miss my Mom greatly, and I look forward to the day when we are reunited...in Heaven, where we will NEVER have to say goodbye again...EVER.

To my Mom:
Thank you so much for giving me life and loving me!
Happy 64th Birthday!!
I LOVE YOU!!!

Seven Fourteen

So today is my birthday and what a great day it has been!

My day began with prayer, thanking God for another year of life, then I headed to the docks to make my way to Catalina.

It was great, especially because the trip was FREE! Yes, Catalina Express offers a FREE roundtrip ride to Catalina if you go ON your birthday. So...off I went.

I did quite a bit.

Arrived at about 9:00 and I went to breakfast.

After breakfast I took a scenic tour that included lots of interesting facts about Catalina. If you ever go, I would recommend it.

After the scenic tour, I hopped on a semi-submerged boat where I got to see fish up close and personal...right outside my sub window. It was pretty cool!

Then, I headed over to get my FREE birthday scoop of ice cream.

Then headed back home where I proceeded to get my annual birthday bundt cake, and then to my favorit spot for mariscos.
Yes, it was a pretty full day. And...I gave away another one of my "blessing boxes". That really made me happy.

I gotta say...I love my birthdate...July 14th.

Just to give you some "fun facts" about me...I was born on the 14th day of the 7th month at 1421 hours. So as you can see...I am surrounded by sevens. Not that I'm into numbers (because I'm not), I just think it's kinda cool.

Oh, and my nighttime radio host played my song request and wished me a happy birthday on the radio.

In the words of Ice Cube, "Today was a good day."

Let the DIALOGUE begin: What is you best birthday memory?

Now Throw Your Hands in the Air!

Oh my goodness! What a day this has been!

So my birthday is tomorrow (unless you're on the East coast which means that you are already 52 minutes into MY day), and this morning I celebrated with my friends Judy and Wendy. We went to go hear my FAVORITE band DW3. These guys are FANTASTIC! Today marks the 5th time that I've seen them perform since last December.

Here are a few things that I love about them:

1. They can SANG! That's the urban version of "they sing very well."
2. They sing a great variety of songs like old-skool R&B, new R&B (only the good stuff though), and when they perform in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood, they throw in a few Latin hits.
3. They are so "down to earth". They don't walk around with their noses up in the air. They actually engage with the audience and today I even got to take pics with two of the band members, Damon Reel (one of the lead vocalists) and Rick Marcel (the mean guitar player...and I mean mean as in...he can play your socks of with that guitar mean).

So we sang, danced in our seats (because the venue where we were doesn't really allow actual dancing), and just had a GRAND ol' time!

If you've never heard these dudes perform, I say, "What are you waiting for?!? GO!!!" I'm including the link to their website so that you can see for yourself what all the hype is about. You'll thank me later. ;-)

Now Let the DIALOGUE begin: Do you have a favorite band whose performances you just HAVE to go see when they're in your town?

Happy Birthday "Billie"!

Yes, I'm back. Yes, I know It's been a while. So...I'm gonna jump right on in.

Today is the birthday of a good friend of mine. A very good friend. We'll call this friend "Billie".

Billie and I met 11 years ago and during those 11 years, I have been the "constant" in our friendship...always reachable, always locatable. Just, always. Billie on the other hand...not so much.

The last time I saw Billie was April 19th. Before that, December 31st. Before that...I really couldn't tell you.

Over the past 11 years, I have endured a LOT with Billie. Way more than most people would. Helping Billie out of "situations" because that's what FRIENDS do. In fact, most would have given up and washed their hands of Billie a long time a go. Probably 10 years ago.

But something in me keeps holding on. Something in me simply can not ignore or walk away. Something in me has always rooted for Billie. I have seen potential in Billie when Billie couldn't see it. Truth be told, even as I write these words, I still don't think Billie sees it. We all need someone who sees in us what we can't see in ourselves. I am that someone for Billie.

So...how can I give up? I very well may be the only one who's rooting for Billie, and if I stop...then what?

I've never asked much from Billie except for consistency. For the "disappearing acts" to stop. Mainly because I worry when I don't hear from Billie. Most times, I just get the brush off, as though I've made up the disappearing acts in my mind. But, Billie and I both know that's not the truth. The reason I know this is because Billie PROMISED me...PROMISED me on April 19th that the disappearing acts were over. When I heard those words, everything within me wanted to BELIEVE that THIS time...Billie was telling the truth. I don't know when I've ever wanted anything to be more true. I BELIEVED.

Then April 20th came and went. May 1st came and went. May 31st Came and went. And here we are...June 2nd...Billie's birthday, and I haven't heard a word.

Sure, I could pick up the phone and call. But I won't.
Sure, I could send a text. But I won't.
Sure, I could send an email. But I won't.

For 11 years, I have done ALL of the reaching. ALL!

I can't reach anymore. If Billie wants to be a part of my life, Billie needs to reach out to ME for a change.

In spite of the fact that I have no idea WHERE Billie is or HOW Billie is...June 2nd is still a very special day for me. And so, I have prayed and asked God to bless Billie, wherever Billie may be. And that, is probably the very best thing I can do for Billie.

The other thing I will do in honor of this day is include Billie's favorite song: Rocket Love by Stevie Wonder.
Billie and I have sung many songs together...including this one. I miss that.

Wherever you are Billie, be blessed, and ALWAYS know that you are LOVED, by me, and more importantly...by God.

Now...Let the Dialogue Begin: Is there anyone who you'd like to reach out to, but for whatever reason (aside from death) you are unable?

Talk to me!

Til next time...

It's MY Birthday and I'll do what I want to!

Yes folks, today is my birthday. And a wonderful birthday it has been!

It began with church service where my best friend (of 36 years) attended because that was my special birthday request. No,church isn't her thing, but for ONE day out of the year she was willing to do something that's not her thing, because it is MY thing.
Seeing her there made me happy. And that happiness superceded the disappointment that I felt over the fact that my other best friend (of 33 years)was not there. No, church isn't her thing either, but for me, you'd've thunk she would make an exception. And maybe she would have if it weren't for the 15 mile bike ride that we were originally going to do to celebrate my day.

Yes, I was excited about the ride. Yes, she registered and paid for it. And yes, I let her know that we weren't going to be doing the ride afterall because I would rather be at church. Yes...church is where I wanted to be on MY birthday.

So I send the first text letting her know about the cancellation. Crickets. No reply.
I send a 2nd text to make sure that she got the 1st. Crickets again.
Ok...I guess you're mad.
I didn't call because I hate confrontation and I hate having people over talk me without letting me get my point out. So...my preferred method of communication in situations like theses is a letter. And that's what I did.

I wrote her a letter and enclosed a check to reimburse her for the registration fee. You'd think that would settle the issue. Well...apparently not. She hasn't responded to my letter nor did she wish me a happy birthday.
First time in 33 years. I guess it's like they say...there's a first time for everything.

So...who knows? Is this the end of a 33 year friendship? I would hope not, but the ball is clearly in her court. I gotta admit, I'm baffled by the whole thing. I mean really! I could understand if I were messin' around with her man, or lied to her, or did something MAJOR like that. But change MY plans for MY birthday, and for THAT she's angry?!? I just don't get it.

But I'm at a point in my life where I can't worry about it. I can't change her heart or mind. After 45 years I have been "thrown away" by so many people that being "thrown away" by one more won't really make a difference. No, I never thought that SHE of all people would through me away, but maybe my shelf life of friendship was up. Who really knows? Until she begins talking to me again (if she ever does), I'll never know.

And please, don't tell me to "be the bigger person" and CALL her. I have been the "bigger person" for 45 years, asking people to "come back" over stuff that wasn't even my fault. I'm tired! Either I have value, or I don't. That's it. That's all.

So, as the title of the post says, "It's MY Birthday and I'll do what I want to!" I've done what I wanted and I've had a fabulous 45th birthday!

Let the DIALOGUE begin
: Have you ever lost a friendship because you changed YOUR birthday plans?

Happy 43 to ME!!!

43 years ago today I made my grand entrance into the world.

On Sunday, the 14th day of the 7th month at 1421 hours (that's 2:21 p.m.)

I'm not a "numbers" person, but I've always loved the day of my birth. It's FILLED with SEVENS.

My birth month is a 7.
My birth date 14, is a multiple of 7.
The time of my birth (in military time) is 1421. Again, multiples of 7.
I was born in '68. Add those up you get 14. A multiple of 7.

Most folks call the number 7 "lucky". I don't believe in luck though. I believe in God. Seven is His number of completion. I am complete.

Hey, how 'bout this...I'm 43 now. Add those up, what do you get?

I don't know what's in store for me in this 43rd year of my life, but I am praying and believing for the BEST. I am READY for the BEST.

My birthday verse is Jeremiah 29:11
"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

That's a PROMISE, and I am standing on the promises of God today, and everyday!

After 43 years, I don't know that I can say that I'm where I want to be, but I do know that I could be in a position and condition that's a whole lot worse.

There's a radio announcer named Levi, and he always says this, "I'm doing better than some, not as good as others".

And one of the ministers at my church says, "We're in good shape, for the shape we're in."

I agree with both.

Now if you haven't figured me out by now...I am GRATEFUL.

Grateful to be able to SEE the words as I am typing them on the page. That alone is blessing enough. Yet I am blessed in so many more ways, I simply can not count them all. To count them would be impossible.

So for now, to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, I simply say THANK YOU! I pray that my life be one that is pleasing and acceptable in Your sight today, tomorrow, and forevermore. In Jesus' name, Amen.

My birthday song is: Glorious by Martha Munizzi. Yes, I was created to make His praise Glorious!

Let the DIALOGUE begin! What "non-traditional" thing do you do to celebrate YOUR birthday?

Talk to me (c'mon, it's my birthday after all)!

Til next time...
